Games during the marriage ceremony and aferwards are common and fun.
Indian weddings are spectacular and magnificent events, and are as much a ceremony for families and friends to come together and enjoy as they are the joining of the bride and groom in holy matrimony. Apart from all the fun and celebration and gift taking and of course the food, games played during the wedding ceremony are a part of the whole occasion as well. Games have been played during Indian wedding ceremonies for centuries, and although they have evolved, some games are played in almost every Indian wedding. Some of these games are:
Hide the groom’s shoes:The bride and the groom are directed to remove their footwear before stepping into the mandap for the holy rituals. The bridesmaids take this opportunity to take the groom’s shoes and hide them. Knotted strings, hide the groom’s shoes are popular in marriage ceremonies.. After the marriage ceremony, if the groom is unable to find his shoes, the girls demand a “ransom” to return his shoes. This game is a lot of fun with a lot of “conspiracies” to find the perfect hiding place and with the groom’s spies looking out for the steal. Everyone enjoys this game, except the groom maybe!
Fish for the ring:This is another common game played in almost all Indian wedding ceremonies. The groom and bride are surrounded by friends and family members, and asked to take off their wedding rings. Their rings are then placed in a shallow dish of milk, or water filled with rose petals. The bride and groom are then asked to fish for their rings from the dish at the same time, and the person who wins is deemed to have an upper hand in their future household.
Kissing game:This game is popular in many south Indian weddings. The groom places a betel leaf or a piece of clove in between his lips, and the bride is asked to chew or bite off the other half of the leaf or clove. It sometimes leads to a passionate kiss between the couple, which predicts a happy married life for them. The groom often teases the bride to get a kiss in front of the entire marriage party, while the bride tries to shy away.
Search name:This is a fun game where the bridesmaids use henna to write the groom’s name in tiny letters among the other mehndi patterns on the bride’s hand. The groom is then asked to hold his bride’s hand and search for his name in the complex mehndi patterns. This game gives the groom a reason to hold his wife’s hand, which symbolizes a good relationship in the future.
Knotted strings:In this game, the bridesmaids give a knotted string to the newlywed couple. The couple is then asked to untie the knot, but with the rule that both the bride and groom can use only one hand to meet the ends. This game sees the couple working together to unravel the knot, which symbolizes them working together to solve their future problems.
