Larry aka. Dragon (Left) & Donald (Right)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Photography: Jennifer Smith

Larry is my cousin who I have known since I can remember and he is still a best friend today. Larry and I are six months apart in age. He was the person instrumental in getting me to move to Philadelphia. Come to think of it, he was also instrumental in getting me to move to California in the early 90′s. He moved here to attend Drexel. He drove a large Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Larry grew up in the Washington DC area. His dad was an electronic genius and their basement was filled with a treasure trove of electronic equipment. He worked for the Naval Research Labs on very esoteric stuff most of which was classified. Larry and I were always trying to get him to spill the beans but we never got very far. He was my favorite adult in the family because I think he was still basically a kid himself. Larry grew up with that natural understanding of things electronic and still works with esoteric electronic devices writing software to make them communicate.

In those days we all had alternate names some of which stuck to the point that it was hard to get rid of them. In one chapter (1967-68), we shared a house in Philadelphia on Waverly St. and since we had no money we invented our own games, one of which was a version of monopoly with all of the local Philadelphia street names. We had to scrounge around to find things to use as playing pieces and Larry’s was a Dragon, a name he has had a hard time escaping. Mine was kangaroo and Carl and Kathy, the couple we shared the house with were Pelican and Thimble. Luckily my name didn’t stick.

Donald was my best man and my best friend from the Univ. of Maine. He was an Oriental Philosophy major and introduced me to Zen Buddhism, Taoism and Jazz. I was an engineering major and after spending too much time with boring books, oriental philosophy was pretty interesting. He was the quintesential Taoist and was last sighted in the Northeast kingdom of Vermont which he escaped in the winter by hiding out in Jamaica. He is still very hard to find. Read "Cold Mountain" to understand Donald.

Note the vegetarian, eggless wedding cake.
